Hi Ingrid, groupies,
Finally I'm able to write something about what happened on and around March 24th.
Without exaggeration I'd say these have been some of the best days of my life.
First and foremost, the concert was a TRIBUTE in the truest sense of the word.
Every aspect of his talent was highlighted this evening:
Jaco the technical innovator,
Jaco the big band man,
Jaco the composer......
but most of all what came clear through was Jaco's main motto:
whatever you do, one should never forget to have FUN.
And that's what this night was filled with: pure FUN.
A personal highpoint for me was Felix sitting in
with the New Cool Collective on Barbary Coast.
Not only did he blend in perfectly with his
powerful popping notes, he took charge!
Everybody who has heard the New Cool Collective
knows that this is one of the strongest collectives
in Europe, it's not easy to blend in as easy as Felix did.
And how about that Julius....
Saturday he was completely blown away by Stephane Galland's
drum playing (check him out, Dennis Chambers, eat your heart out),
a day later he was laying down a terribly funky groove
together with his brother, while playing with Michel H.'s band.....
again, his ability of adapting to new music plus
adding some personal things as well was amazing.....
Forget the stories about Felix and Julius carrying their fathers torch......
these guys will make it on their own,
they have more than enough talent for it
PLUS they're nice guys!
The 50 bassists thing......it was a thrill from beginning to end.
In the afternoon, during rehearsals, I couldn't help but laugh
in amazement about so many bassists checking out eachother's gear,
tuning their instruments etc. Rehearsals went well,
but the performance itself was ten times better.
Imagine this: ten bassists on the left balcony,
ten on the right and thirty on stage, basked in light,
surrounding the 1100 people audience.....it was magical.
Finally, I had the pleasure of being a host for
Felix, Julius, Thomas, Philippe and Thierry.
I want to thank them for the memorable times we had together,
the hilarious moments (Thomas the V-guy, extreme right moves,
the occasional U turn, eating real american dorito's)
the music we played and listened to
(Jaco, Cannonball, Kirk, Drum 'n Bass, Moondog, Hendrix, James Brown...).
And then there was Orjan who stayed in Amsterdam
(looking at eachother during Barbary Coast and knowing
exactly what the other thought was a memorable moment)
and Graham Allen from the UK.....all the nicest guys,
I wish we can meet again in the near future.
I know that Joni Mitchell fans have an annual Joni week,
where they meet eachother and enjoy their idol's music....
why shouldn't we be able to organize the same thing??
Phew....so much more I want to tell you, but I'll stop here.
This has been a overwhelming experience for me (shit I'm crying again)
and I want to thank everybody who made this possible.
Modeste, you showed them, just like our idol said:
"IT AIN'T BRAGGING IF YOU CAN BACK IT UP!"
That's exactly what you did, thank you so much my friend.
Greetings,
Jeroen
Howdy.
I just woke up, since that evening was really long, my flight left early
Mon. morning because of an appointment in Stockholm, -and instead of sleeping
I was enjoying the wonderful view from above the whole flight...as always.
I had a great time in Amsterdam, (being a tourist the first day)
meeting Jeroen and Thomas in person at last,
and also having the pleasure of meeting your two sons.
And then, The Evening!!
The place was packed, and I mean packed!!
I gotta tell you I'm so glad I got this chance to be one of the 50.
It couldn't have been easy to keep all these bassplayers "on the leash",
but Modeste did a great job at the rehearsal, so later when Victor
was conducting, we were all ready to go. It was a night to remember,
and it was so nice to hear your voice Ingrid!
As you mentioned Julius and Felix burned, sitting in
AND doing their own performance. Wow!!
I am now also a fan of "Pastorius the next generation", but not
only because of their musical skills but also because of their personality.
Julius and Felix are indeed two talented and very nice young men.
I'm sure we'll get to hear and see some of that evening on this board later
through Jeroen, and whatever I can contribute with is in my camera
waiting to be exposed. Looking forward to that!!
Gotta go for some breakfast now. Me hungry!
All the best and much love.
Örjan
Dear Ingrid,
The 50 bassplayers were everything more I would have expected.
Uniquely unisono. Perfectly in balance. Absolutely beautiful!!
Personally I was most impressed with Felix' appearence with the bigband,
playing so strong, to a strong and well conducted band.
A promise for the future of music! But he well showed that he has a style of
his own by also knocking down any Marcus Miller lover with a firm thumb job.
Yes he can!
Anyway, a great evening in Amsterdam, not to forget, or rather to repeat.
thanks, (and yes, we all heard your voice!)

Hi there everybody!!
No doubt yesterday was a once in a lifetime experience!
It srarted with a big cue outside the sold out venue...
Then above us out of anybody's the track 'Come on Come over' was played.
Where that sound came from I still don't know, but it was funny
to see everybody looking for these groovy sounds.
But later that evening we got a wonderful rendition
of that song by Michel Hatzegeorgiu, with if I am not mistaken,
jazz singer Isabel as the vocal. Michel did also 'Donna Lee' and
with eyes closed you might think that Jaco is back again! Might,
because when Felix entered the stage I really believed that Jaco is back.
As we were treated with various videoclips of young Jaco in action,
I was startled about how Felix's motions
and sound with the bass match his father's...
I also want to mention here the opener of this special evening:
the New Cool Collective Big Band, which grooved into
'Barbary Coast', 'Three views of a Secret' and the joyous 'Liberty City'.
New Cool Collective plays this Thursday here in Amsterdam
with guitar great Jan Akkerman, who is also a fan of Jaco.
But it's hard to find a music-lover here in Amsterdam,
who is not a fan of Jaco's,
seeing this fully packed Melkweg venue.
I like to thank the organizer Modeste
for making it possible to experience a wonderful evening!
As he said: "Now it's up to you to spread the music of Jaco."
Surely I will do!

Hello y'all...
I'am one of the 50 bassplayers from the Jaco tribute night in Amsterdam.
I had a great time, hearing my favorite music,
playing it and most of all meeting Felix and Julius!
Felix (thnx for the autograph on Eva's T-shirt, remember...)
I was realy impressed by the playing of both of you.
Thnx again for a night i won' t forget!!!!
Regards,
Michael Nicolas Brian Kamp
Hi family!
I was one of the 50 bassplayer at the "tribute" in the Melkweg Amsterdam yesterday.
Man!!!! It was the most fantastic days ever! Really.
First of all because there was so much material of Jaco
I've never seen or even knew. It was all so respectfull!
In the second place: Felix and Julius..............
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cannot express myself but it's almost scary to hear the same Jaco-feels.
If Jaco knew this (and maybe he will) he would be so proud!
Thanks for let me hear this. I played the bass all day today.
Inspired as hell! Thanks again for being there!
Hope Felix and Julius will be big and have a very long lifetime.
I know they are big already!

Hello Ingrid, Julius, Felix and all others,
When we (Danny my bass teacher, his father and me), arrived at the Melkweg
it was very crowded outside, we thought we would never get in on time.
Lucky us, we entered at the right side of the row and
things were moving, so we were inside in ten minutes.
After only a few minutes inside I saw Felix, not difficult noticing
because of his height, and resemblance with his father.
I right away asked him if I could get a picture of the two of us.
I'd had a little talk with him and he was really very symphatic.
The night began with a cool animation movie where Jaco stood central.
After that there was the New Cool Collective, and boy can they swing.
The guest appearances by Victor, Felix, Michel where thrilling,
I enjoyed each and every second of it.
I was impressed by the way Felix played Barbary Coast, amazing.
During the night live performances where mixed with video material
of Jaco from all over his career, personally I enjoyed the take
where Jaco played a piece with Toots Thielemans.
It did something to me that I still can't describe.
In the past weeks upcoming to the tribute I still couldn't imagine
how it must sound when 50 bassists played a piece by Jaco.
Well it was really impressive, you could see on the people's faces
that it was a fun thing to do and that they all
had studied they're asses of....Respect.
The performance by Michel ....wow....no words, it's inside........
Felix and Julius pleasured us with a really groovy piece,
and Felix, the Wooten thumbpluck was very impressive,
I'm thinking about taking a Wootcamp myself hahaha........
I can type for hours how tremendous this night was,
but I won't, it would be too monotone.
What I do wanna say is that this evening gave me a feeling
which I don't feel often, I was again moved by the Musician " Jaco",
I am grateful for what he meant to musical history
and what he still means to many of us.
The spirit of Jaco will carry on,
we all make sure it will.
This night will stay with me for a very long time.
Respect.
Peter Verhey
Hey Ingrid!
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the Tribute at the Melkweg!
Unfortunately I came by train, so I had to leave quite early...I was very
impressed by Felix's playing of Barbary Coast with the New Cool Collective.
Being 19 myself, I realised I'd better start practicing some more...
The big bass-orchestra was a very nice idea too, I just wished I could've joined in ;-)
Maybe next time (Modeste ;-) ? ) all the bassists in the venue can join?
The tribute definitely made me 'feel' Jaco even more. I'll just go
back to my bass now and try to honor Jaco as much as I can...
Oh wait, my congratulations to everyone who helped organise this beautiful thing,
especially Modeste! All the best to everyone!
