May 18, 2003:  DAY FOR "CRISIS"

Today, and for ever, we honor Jaco's tune "Crisis", which
was omitted from the recently released anthology. (see below)

Ricky Schultz's liner notes state the following about the decision
to keep it off the recording, against Jaco's (fought for) wishes:

"However, I felt strongly that such a revelation would be easier
to represent if Jaco didn't insist on opening it with "Crisis,"
probably the least accessible piece of music he ever laid down.
In his own inimitable style Jaco refused my pleas to resequence
the record. "I'm going to shake them up," he told me. This was
important, it was personal, and he was passionate about making a
statement about the crisis that manifested itself in "Liberty City."
"Crisis" can be a difficult piece of music to listen to, but
it is great art, an expression of pain, tension, and brutality
so pure it could be the soundtrack to Picasso's Guernica."

To commemorate, listen to this wonderful composition: CRISIS
and read the story behind the-making-of said tune here.

Crisis is my Favorite song on that record.
I always saw it as a battle cry,
a yell off the mountain tops.
~Chris Mansfield

"Crisis personifies what Jaco stood for,
and that is clearly why he fought for it.
Jaco does not lose his battle."
~Neil Weiss

Bless You, Jaco

Images, sounds, memories delivered a 1-2 punch that ONLY his melody could ..."

ADDENDUM:

Sadly there are gross errors in the credits,
here are the corrections due Jaco and the other artists:

Weather Report photo, page 4: neither Airto Moreira nor Peter Erskine appear on
the photo as it has been listed (they're Alejandro Acuna and Manolo Badrena)

The drummer on "Liberty City" (CD#2, track #2) is Jack DeJohnette, not Peter Erskine.

On "Blackbird" (CD#2, track #4) Peter Erskine plays shaker
(rainstick) and percussion (he is credited as drummer).

The drummer on "Word Of Mouth" (CD#2, track #5) is Jaco Pastorius, not Peter Erskine.
What was omitted is that Jaco also plays some other instruments on that tune
(tambourines, timpani, Chinese cymbals, wood blocks, gong, ...).

Regardless of the fact that the quality control lacked greatly in the
making of this CD, who Jaco was, and what he created shines through it all.

January 14, 2003:  MARCUS PELTA

...may you rest in Peace..we have lost a great person, friend, and Jaco lover.

...forever in our memories...

December 5, 2002

Dear Ingrid, Julius and Felix,

Thanks once again for the opportunity to be close to you,
play with you, eat and laugh with you, say "FAAH" with you...

Julius, thank you for the gift of your room and your bed. It may not seem
like much to you, but to me it was a high honor - a privilege bestowed only
upon someone trusted and loved, which is how you made me feel by your
generous sacrifice.

Felix, with your father's-hands-plus, thank you for your silent communications,
your subtle gestures of friendliness, and for revealing to me your
preferential ambition, which I shared with your mother. She liked it.
I was moved by it, and look forward to its unfolding.

Finally, Ingrid, maternal friend, thank you for your home again.
Thank you for your supportive ways, and your love.

Whether I see you all again in 360 days or so, or if our paths don't converge
again for any reason at all, you will always echo in my thoughts. I feel such
a familial connection with all of you, one that goes beyond this finite life,
that whether or not we see each other again, I will always be with you,
and you with me.

Love,

Marcus

December 1, 2002:  HAPPY FIFTY-FIRST JACO!

"Peace, Carrots & Mocha Amaretto cake....."

Today Jaco would have been 51 years of age, so tonight
Julius and Felix are celebrating their father's birthday at the
Musicians Exchange at One Night Stan's in Hollywood, Florida.

...and what a successful party it was...over 200 Jaco enthusiasts,
at least 20 musicians performed.....friends came in from Brooklyn,
Brazil, Holland, Italy, Tampa, and Naples...others were missed...
but then there is always next year.....faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :-)

Jack Pastorius called right before the start and expressed his sadness
about not being there, and asked to tell everyone at the party he
loved them, promising to be there for the next one, if not sooner.. yes!

Felix and Julius with Adam Lucas, Colin James, Jimmy Staten, Tyler Jordan,
and Mark Bell tore it up doing WR and Jaco. Mike Gerber brought tears to our
eyes with his rendition of Used To Be A Cha-cha. Melton Mustafa and friends
swung hard, while Maurizio Rolli and Diana Torto (what a voice!!) mesmerized us
all with a duet. Joe Botto played his heart out on Portrait of Tracy, and Neil Weiss'
rendition of Continuum floored us. Marcus Pelta and Dave Shelley sat in throughout
the night, filling in when needed. Eddy Balzola brought warm sensitivity to Three Views.

WLRN's Ed Bell kept the momentum going with his upbeat personality, raffles and such....
all seats were taken, with little standing room left, best of all there were smiles everywhere!

Warm appreciation to Joey Lawler, Jaco's cousin, for being here, and making it to our home.
~'t was real good seeing you, Joey, just sorry we didn't get a chance to hang more.~

Jeroen called from Holland, ~thanks JJ! Missed you, Thomas, John, Bo, Orjan, and the others~.

Special Thanks to Atila and Alcione Tini (Brazil), and Modeste (Holland), who traveled those
miles to be a part of the celebration honoring, and remembering Jaco through his music.

Julius, Felix, and I THANK YOU ALL for being there, and for your love. Holly, you are the best!
Janice, Eddie, Shanti, Avel, Yriana, Maximilian, B.O.B., Theresa, Alys, Lester, Al, Ernie..thanks.

..it was the best-est weekend, with many, many, many memorable moments...leaving me with
another 360 degree panoramic view in my mind, and heart of how vast the love for Jaco truly is...
and that it will not only remain, but grow. Happy 51st, dearest Jaco! -------<------{@
