NOW AVAILABLE IN STORES!!
For list of songs, dates, and personnel, scroll down.
Here is an impression by John Sanna:
1. I had read that Peter Erskine said the original project had been shelved
because of poor sounding source tapes, but the sound is terrific.
2. It’s nice to hear Teen Town without the keyboard doubling the lead line, as it did on 8:30.
The attack and phrasing just wasn’t right on the keyboard, and it never sounded right after ‘77.
3. It is amazing just how much proper recording picking up Jaco’s tone correctly adds to his solos, as
on the version of Portrait of Tracy. His best solos were as much about subtlety and nuance as flash.
4. The difference in Port of Entry from the version on Night Passage is unexpected, considering
they were recorded at the same time and venue. I always assumed that they recorded several shows
to select from the best performance. But this version of POE is substantially different, including
essentially no bass solo, and no dramatic break near the end, interrupted by crowd noise.
5. When I first saw the song list, I thought it was a big mistake to jump around
from period to period. But it is remarkable how even and coherent the whole thing
comes off, considering they are jumping between 9 years, and entirely different bands.
September 21, 2002: 15 YEARS AGO TODAY..
...we painfully said Adios to Jaco...
Click here to hear Jaco's Dad, Jack, sing
Cole Porter's Just One Of Those Things.
"The instrument you hear is called a
Cordovox, and was played by a young man at the time (1961) named Kenny
Duca. He died young, around 30 years of age. He plays all the
melodic/harmonic material you hear (bass lines included),
and Jack is playing stand-up drums as well as singing.
All the tracks they recorded that day were done in one take,
the whole session was about an hour long." Marcus Pelta
Lyrics:
It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things
It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things
If we'd thought a bit, of the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot, not to cool down
So goodbye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things

September 11, 2002: 9.11 PEACE ON EARTH
Most Gracious are those who walk on
the Earth in humility, and when we
address them, we say "PEACE."
Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
May all beings everywhere plagued with sufferings of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free.
Be a breath of life to the body of human kind, a dew to the soil of the human heart, and a fruit upon the tree of humility.
Know that we attaineth God when we loveth, and only that victory endures in consequences of which noone is defeated.
And we shall beat our swords into ploughshares, and our spears into pruning hooks.
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation--neither shall they learn war any more.
A weapon howsoever powerful it may be, can always be superseded by a superior one;
but no weapon can, however, be superior to non-violence and love.
