July 2, 2002: RAYMOND MATTHEWS BROWN
October 13, 1926 - July 2, 2002
"The Real Blues" MP3
If Ray Brown were a tree, he'd have to be an oak: solid, far-reaching and durable.
But an oak that needs no pruning.
~ Author Unknown
He's the epitome of forethought. Sympathetic forethought. As for his solos...
do you know his solo on ‘How High the Moon’ in our Stratford album? Well,
that should be put in a time capsule and sealed up. Because that's it. That's it!
~ Oscar Peterson
"Ray Brown, on bass, played the strongest, most fluid and
imaginative bass lines in modern jazz at the time."
~ Dizzy Gillespie
Ray Brown, unparalleled double bassist in jazz history, a business-savvy musician,
sideman, leader, author, publisher, collaborator, producer, and more..spanning over
more than five decades, distinguished for his beautiful warm enormous tone,
his precision, and his taste, is one of the most recorded artists in music history.
....My deepest thanks.... for always.
June 27, 2002: JOHN ENTWISTLE
October 9, 1944 - June 27, 2002
As with Jaco, to many Entwistle was considered "the Jimi Hendrix of bass".
Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for the Doors, called Entwistle
"one of the great, great rock 'n' roll bassists of all time. A real genius."
"A lot of my playing is improvising," Entwistle explained to Bass Frontiers magazine in 1996.
"I will just discover different little patterns or riffs in any key at anytime.
Somewhere in my brain I have a list of things I can play.
It's a matter of putting them in the right order."
"A lot of our fans liked us because we made mistakes. It made us look more human.
And then the fact that we could actually sort of burst out laughing on stage
when we made a real bad blunder," Entwistle said in 1995.

May 17, 2002: J.P. INC. SITE AND THE EARLY YEARS
Disgruntled and frustrated fans waiting for the much publicized release of "Portrait of Jaco,
the early years" let it be known on the JPI message forum which triggered a barrage of
accusations and negativity by several individuals posing not as themselves egged on
largely by persons who received a thrill from the attention the subject matter provoked,
'any attention is better than no attention'. This resulted in misdirected blaming, and
letters written by John Pastorius
and the webmaster Eric Young.
