SEPTEMBER 2, 2009:  JACO MURAL WHITE-WASHED, DESTROYED

Discussion

Ciccio painfully shares his experiences that led up to the demolishing of his work,
followed by a half-hearted apology lacking honesty and dis-jointed reasoning.

AUGUST 13, 2009:  REST IN PEACE, DEAR LES

Lester William Polsfuss AKA Les Paul (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009)

The World is a much quieter place without him....

"His zest for performing, his openness to new genres and, especially,
his ability to adapt after endless physical setbacks--a shattered arm,
a heart attack, arthritic hands--were inspirational.

A near-electrocution should have cured his youthful passion for invention.
A car crash should have ended his brilliant guitar career decades ago.
Instead, it produced genuine American folklore: Les told doctors to
set his broken wing into permanent guitar-playing position."

AUGUST 12, 2009:  RASHIED ALI rip

Rashied Ali, born Robert Patterson (July 1, 1933 – August 12, 2009)
was an American free jazz and avant-garde jazz drummer best known for
playing with John Coltrane in the last years of Coltrane's life.

JUNE 27, 2008:  DISCHORD OVER JACO'S RECENTLY FOUND BASS

A fabled bass guitar that belonged to tragic jazz great Jaco Pastorius and disappeared
20 years ago has turned up in New York - smack in the heart of a nasty legal battle.

Matthew Brewster, owner of 30th Street Guitar in Manhattan, is taking Pastorius' family
to court. He claims, in a federal lawsuit filed yesterday, that he is the rightful
owner of "the bass of doom" - which is now worth $75,000.

"If I wanted to, I could've sold it," he said. "I was the one who contacted the family.
I wanted to do something friendly."

MARCH 8, 2008:  JACO'S FRETLESS FOUND!

Chris Jisi for Bass Player Magazine

"The party who brought the bass to Will Lee’s apartment had previously reported
the hair standing up on his arms as he played a bass melody from “A Remark You Made”
along with the recording, and found the tone and duration of the notes were an eerily
unmistakable sonic match. Which brings me to the second aspect that struck me
(and perhaps this is where my fervent imagination finally took over): how
in-tune the bass seemed to play. There were no washy, smeared notes beneath my
fingers—just pure, strong tones that sat firmly on the rosewood board.
(The bass had new-ish strings t-hat were not Jaco’s favored Rotosounds.)"

Hancock Steals Grammy Album of Year
By SANDY COHEN – 41 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) —
Herbie Hancock shocked Kanye West, best-album presenters Usher and Quincy Jones,
and just about anyone who was watching the Grammys when the
jazz veteran won the night's big prize for "River: The Joni Letters."

But perhaps no one was more shocked than Herbie Hancock.

"It's immeasurable how surprised I am," Hancock said Sunday night after the show.

"I didn't even hear my name at first," he continued. "Then I heard the word 'River'
and I said, 'Is this true? Is this happening?'"
