At tonight's meeting, the commissioners unanimously
stated that they will all vote "yes" on November 28, 2007.
It will then be official!!
YES, PEOPLE, JACO DID IT! We will have a Jaco Pastorius Park
in Oakland Park, Florida, a triangle wedged in-between
Dixie Highway and the railroad tracks. :o)
The City is also planning on implementing literature to
introduce Jaco into the schools early on, so children
grow up knowing who their Park was named after.

OCTOBER 13, 2007: UPDATE ON JACO'S TWINS
PLUS A JACO ANNOUNCEMENT AND TWIST OF EVENTS
Colin, Felix, Julius, and Adam, after 6 years, are taking a sabbatical
from WOTG. They are individually pursuing careers in music, adding
variety to their collective growth. Colin has been playing locally in
South Florida, such as at Arturo Sandoval's on Miami Beach, Julius
performs in/around NY and Florida with Bendy Pastorius Group,
while Felix has been on the road and studio with Jeff Coffin,
as well as working with the Bendy Pastorius Group,
and his jazz quartet Counterpoint Jazz Collective.
Felix and Julius were invited to participate in the Penang Jazz Festival
in Malaysia on December 1, 2007, Jaco's birthday. The Penang Jazz
Festival committee was so kind, and generous to make it available
to Jaco's twins, alas, after all the work by the Penang Jazz Festival,
Felix and Julius at the last minute had to cancel due to plans by
Jaco Pastorius, Inc. for a special event honoring their father taking
place on December 2 at the Broward Center for Performing Arts with
the great Peter Erskine, Big Band, Gerald Veasley, Jimmy Haslip,
and more. To the twins' great disappointment they had no choice but
to withdraw from partaking in the Penang Jazz Festival in order to
attend the honoring of their father in the 20th year of his passing.
All the band members appreciate the understanding, and patience.
As soon as the specifics about the December 2 celebration
becomes available it will be posted at www.jacopastorius.com.

MARCH 15, 2007: PARK MEETING REPORT
Several fans attended the meeting to speak on behalf of naming the new park that
is being build in Oakland Park, Florida after Jaco, among them Karla Damien from
Miami Beach, Henry Carpenter from Castle Rock, CO, Yvelisse and Willy Rios from
Hialeah, myself on behalf of Jaco's twins as well, and of course Robert Rutherford.
The then vice mayor, now mayor of Oakland Park City, Larry Gierer spoke in
support of the naming of Jaco Park, as do several of the other commissioners.
Mayor Gierer spoke with us after the session ended, and stated that the
Park will now be larger in scale than initially planned, and that he
saw no reason why it wouldn't be named after Jaco Pastorius.

Everyone will have four minutes to share their views with the City. This is
Oakland Park's opportunity to honor the 'The World's Greatest Bass Player'.
Jaco grew up here, went to school here, and changed music history here.
It's been nearly 20 years since his death and nothing has been done to
honor him in his hometown. The naming of the new downtown park would
be a fitting and lasting tribute to a man who heard the music in the
life of Oakland Park and south Florida. It will be a welcoming place
for residents and visitors. And a music legend will finally be
recognized by his hometown.
